CIDB unveils moves to enhance Malaysian construction industry

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) expects the construction industry in Malaysia to continue to be bullish, given the steady momentum in the implementation of development projects.

In a statement, the board said the total value of projects would be RM85 billion this year, rising to RM92 billion next year.

Accordingly, CIDB has put in place several initiatives that will boost efficiency and productivity and enhance professionalism in the building sector.

These include the launching of new and updated publications, which will dramatically alter some of the ways the construction business is conducted in this country.

"To ensure that the full economic benefits accrue to all stakeholders including the public, these publications will highlight a number of best practices guaranteed to add value to the entire construction industry value chain," it said.

Under the operations and maintenance value chain, CIDB will launch the Asset and Facility Management (AFM) Implementation Manual to guide asset owners in managing their assets for enhanced value.

The Key Perspectives of AFM has also been documented in an effort to enhance awareness and understanding of the practices, it said.

Under the construction value chain, CIDB will launch the Partnering Implementation Guidelines to facilitate the adoption of partnering strategies in construction projects.

As the partnering concept is new in Malaysia, a first-ever publication documenting key perspectives on partnering for the construction industry will also be launched.

Under the procurement value chain, CIDB will launch the updated Malaysian Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement or MyCESSM.

With the eventual nationwide adoption of these comprehensive standards it is envisaged that the measurement, description and classification of works in civil engineering projects will be further streamlined, ultimately leading to successful completion of projects with minimum claims and disputes.

Two other documents -- A Guide to MyCESSM and the Library of Standard Descriptions -- will be launched in November at three seminars to be conducted by experts from the Public Works Department as well as other local and international specialists.

The seminars are Asset and Facility Management Implementation Manual and Key Perspectives of Asset and Facility Management on Nov 16 at The Gardens Hotel; Partnering Guidebook and Key Perspectives of Partnering on Nov 23-24, the Sunway Resort and Spa; and MyCESSM, the Guidebook and Library of Standard Description on Nov 30, Berjaya Times Square.

The three seminars will be officiated by CIDB chief executive Datuk Seri Ir Dr Judin Abdul Karim.
