Bumi Entrepreneurs Encouraged To Go Into Livestock Industry

KUCHING, April 13 (Bernama) -- Bumiputera entrepreneurs in Sarawak are encouraged to venture into the lucrative livestock industry to boost their income and to meet the rising demand for meat in the state, Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's Department Mohd Naroden Majais said Monday.

Population growth and the people's higher income has led to higher demand than supply, he said. "The livestock industry prospects in this country is very bright as the current demand for meat is higher than supply.

"The production of mutton and beef has become a profitable industry. I hope Bumiputera entrepreneurs will seize the opportunity and go into it seriously," he said when opening a goat rearing entrepreneurial course.

The text of his speech was read out by Pantai Damai state assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi. Naroden, who is responsible for Bumiputera entrepreneurs' development, said the state government through the Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development Unit would encourage more Bumiputeras to be involved in the livestock sector.

He hoped the unit would increase the number of Bumiputera entrepreneurs engaged in large scale livestock rearing in the state. The unit also would help increase the sector's contribution to reduce meat imports and diversify production of raw materials, he said.

On the three-day course, Naroden said it would provide exposure to participants on the livestock industry and production of meat-based products. He said the course would open yet another new business opportunity that has the potential to increase Bumiputeras' income in particular and Sarawakians in general.

"The course will also help entrepreneurs to widen the market for their products especially under the current increasingly uncertain economic scenario," he added. -- BERNAMA
