BIMP-EAGA Cluster Eyes Mart Study

KOTA KINABALU 23 (Bernama) -- The Small and Medium Enterprise Development (SMED) Cluster of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) plans to undertake market study on the agriculture or fishery-based food products.

In a statement here today, the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo) said the study was in response to the recent BIMP-EAGA leaders' directive to make the sub-region a "food basket" for Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean).

MEDCo said the 9th BIMP-EAGA SMED Cluster meeting held in Puerto Princesa, Philippines recently has identified the study as one of the priority actions to be undertaken.

"The cluster has also considered facilitating business-matching and market-linking activities and other services to support proponents of agriculture or fishery-based food products," it said.

Philippines' senior representative to BIMP-EAGA, Merly Cruz, said the SMED Cluster was eyeing the assistance of Japan External Trade Organisation, the Japan International Cooperation Agency or the Economic Research Institute for Asean and East Asia to undertake the study. Cruz, who is also Philippines' Department of Trade Industry undersecretary, said incentives should be given by the host country where the investment was located.

MEDCo acts as Philippines' coordinating office for BIMP-EAGA. Meanwhile, the Palawan Economic Development Council (PEDCo) said it would study trade opportunities for cashew nuts from Palawan. PEDCo said it has also requested the assistance of SMED Cluster to sell fish to other parts of Malaysia and Brunei. -- BERNAMA
