AFTA Brings Positive Impact On Malaysian Businessmen, Says Mukhriz

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5(Bernama) -- The Asean Free Trade Agreement (AFTA), in force since 1993, hashad positive impact on Malaysian businessmen, especially in helping them markettheir products globally, the Dewan Negara was told Wednesday.

Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry DatukMukhriz Mahathir said Malaysian entrepreneurs could easily market theirproducts, particularly in the Asean region without having to go through manytrade barriers, since the agreement came into force.

He said AFTA had also moulded small-and medium-scaleentrepreneurs in the country to be more competitive and engage in healthybusiness transactions with their counterparts in Asean.

"The government feels AFTA implementation hascreated competitive businessmen and the products they produced are also of goodquality, hence facilitating easier marketing.

"AFTA has also paved the way for entrepreneurs tosource for raw materials at a much cheaper price from Asean membercountries," he said when replying to Senator Datuk Azian Osman who wantedto know AFTA's impact on Malaysian businessmen.-- BERNAMA
